Moata McNamara

Ngāpuhi, Te Mahurehure

After what she describes as “too long” in Academia, Moata has come late to writing a series of hybrid works, published in Flash Frontier, At the Bay/ I te Kokoru and other flash fiction publications due out this year. From a background in art and design and a love of languages, she is currently working on a collection revolving around her time at the Roy Hart Centre in Malérargues, France.

Having access to three historic languages, her writing slips between them and the concepts entangled in these between spaces

  1. We explored one of Moata’s poems, ‘Ngaa Wai’, for my Shared Reading session at Mt Albert Library on the 3rd of August. The attendees loved the poem – particularly noting her unique style of writing, how different it was from the ‘usual’ style of poetry. Many felt a sense of being ‘cleansed’ by the water in the poem, freeing them of their negative feelings and fears. We felt it very accurately represented what it was like to be a public speaker, to stand ‘gripping the lectern’, and then to feel your anxiety wash away as you begin to speak.

Thank you Moata for sharing with us!
