Meet magic librarian reader leader Melissa

How did you get into shared reading & why?

My manager had completed the read to lead training and wanted to start a group in our Library space. I was interested in what she shared about it and i wanted to know more!

What do you enjoy about being a Reader Leader?

I enjoy connecting with people through the stories and poems we read. I enjoy discovering new authors and poets and it has fostered a deep love and appreciation for literature.

Are there any stories or poems that have stuck with you & why?

Weeds by Ling Low. This story was about an old man during Covid 19. This was a vulnerable time, and it was great to hear everyone’s experiences about how this affected them.

Any reader who’s journey has inspired you in your group?

Lisa. She is Chinese and English is a second language. Although she no longer attends, watching her join us every week and wanting to participate was humbling. This experience helped our group to see through the Lens of empathy and to help her learn and better her English. Lisa enjoyed learning about new authors, practicing her reading and meeting new people.
