Airana Ngārewa – The Last Living Cannibal

Tomorrow our Tē Mātāwai & City Mission/ Homeground readers will complete Airana Ngārewa’s fantastic book The Last Living Cannibal. It has been quite a ride!

We had some questions for Airana including “Are white horses like oranges in The Godfather?” He says “The horse was inspired by two others of note from South Taranaki. Niu Tirini (as in New Zealand) was the white horse ridden by the prophet Tītokowaru. The second was a horse named Slavery, upon which the founder of my marae won a horse race – I suspect he must’ve been one of the first Māori to ever do so but cannot say for certain.” Thanks Airana for the insight! Stories within stories within stories is what you get from the strongest writer pound for pound in NZ! 🙂
